Why do children learn so much quicker than adults?  

Because they have no nothing in their heads.

No a priori ideas, thoughts or preconceptions of what things should be like. They are open to learning. 

But most adults are not like that generally. 

We are too full of self importance and knowledge. ​We have many assumptions and you all know how the saying goes about assuming. 


Blind assumptions prevent us from seeing what’s in front of us.

The biggest mistake people make in training and learning is trying to intellectualise, rationalise and conceptualise.  It is because they want to put things into boxes and simplify but often by doing so they miss the point. Or end up with a step by step process.

If you have found a good teacher and trust them, then the best thing you can do is do what they say and keep your mouth shut.  They have been before you so practice what they show you and try it first. Over time you will work it out with practice not with talk.

And if you don’t have a teacher but just a practice then let the practice teach you. Keep your beginner’s mind, the open mind. You might learn something!

Keep your mouth shut and your mind open.

Because if you already had the answers you wouldn’t have gone to your teacher in the first place.

Little by little

In today’s world where the media makes you believe that things just happen overnight and information equates to knowledge, many people forget that this is not the true way.

Just like grass growing, learning involves little by little. It is a process of daily growth aa maturation and consolidation takes place. Things don’t just pop up overnight no matter how much you may wish it that way.

Learning involves patience, persistence and humility as we discover more and more over time. When we grow by shoring up our foundation and going deep like the grass.

It cannot be sped up and it cannot be achieved without right effort.

So the secret? Regular and consistent practice. Preferably daily even if only a little bit each day.

Little by little the grass grows.

Knowledge is not always power

Yes. You read that right.  Too much information these days.  So much so that people simply become collectors and do not act on any of it.

Worse are those who think that having the theoretical knowledge is sufficient. But not putting the theory into practice is mere thinking.

However, even worse than this in terms of learning is being waylaid by misinformation.  I went to a workshop the other day where well meaning but ultimately misinformed practitioners and researchers were leading people down the wrong path.

So first you must find the good oil. True knowledge.  But even then you must not forget that the map is not the territory. You must practice it.

Only by dancing can one know the rhythm.

Intelligence in learning

Why do some people learn quicker and more easily than others? It may be movement, or some other field but we don’t assimilate at the same rate.

The difference is in intelligence. But I do not mean IQ.

Intelligence specific to that area and skill. It is really awareness. As I keep telling people, awareness before change.

Body awareness. It is not just proprioception of the muscles. It must be deeper.

This I find is irrespective of age or experience. It is also not about flexibility or strength. Rather, in movement and health, it is more about body intelligence.

A lot of us are out of touch with our bodies so the best thing to do and learn is to listen to the body. To learn to develop a sense of it. And not just the muscles.

It is just like any other communication. It requires good listening skills.

And how do you acquire it? With practice and targeted exercises.

Awareness is fostered by attention, breathing, curiosity, dedication, energy, fun and gentleness. It is play. It is love.

Body intelligence.

Which goes beyond but must begin with simple awareness.

Be at least as interested in what goes on inside you as what goes on around you.

Like any skill, it can be learned and taught.

Honesty, Hope and How to

A big part of learning is the belief that you can actually do it.  It won’t happen overnight but if you put in the work, you know you will get there.  That is hope.

Hope is not goal setting or wishful thinking.  It is really belief.

Unfortunately this is where a lot of people fall down.  They look at something they say they want to learn or be able to do and their first response is “it’s too hard” or “I’m too old for this sh*t” and  “I will never be able to do it”.  Rephrasing that to “that looks challenging and I’m going to work up to it” would be a better way to approach learning.

Why put a self imposed ceiling on your own ability before you even start?  These things are self fulfilling so if you do not believe then you are sabotaging yourself before you even start.  By not believing, you will make excuses not to practice, not to set time aside for it, and then of course your belief will come true.  It’s not really the belief itself but how the belief affects your actions.   Conversely, you can actually believe in yourself and dedicate time, effort and maybe money towards whatever endeavour may have piqued your interest.

However, hope is just the first stage.  Honesty is the hardest thing for people these days.  Or so it seems to me.  “I want to get to the Olympics”, or “I want to look like him/her”, or “I don’t have any time/It’s too expensive”.  These are the dreams and excuses that people use.  It is nothing more than games that your ego plays with you.  They are not real.

However, as it involves honesty with yourself it is very difficult to overcome.  So either you work three times as hard or you seek help.  Get a coach, a friend, someone who has been there before to guide you.

As the saying goes, if it is really important to you then you will make the time.   If not, well, there are a million excuses you can use to lie to yourself.  But really, you just don’t really want that thing enough.

Think about the last thing you chased, be it a job, a person or something else.  How much time did you think about it and work on it and spend every waking moment doing something to get yourself closer to it?  Now if your answer was along the lines of “lots” or “almost all the time” then that was something you actually wanted.  Now think about if you are willing to put in the time and effort towards what you want to learn/be able to do.  Is it even close?  If no, then you don’t really want it and you may as well be honest with yourself now and save your energy.  And there is nothing wrong with that.  Good goal setting is working out what you really want.  Not because your coach told you.  Or your parents.  Or your friends.  It is something you want.  It is something you will move heavens for.

If your answer was yes, and your previous answer to the hope question was also yes then you are on the right path.  You are ready to learn.  That is the preparation phase.

Then comes the work.  Hard work. And How to.

This is when you roll up your sleeves and put your money where your mouth is so to speak.  This involves the daily grind and effort.  This is where a lot of people fall off.  Not because it is difficult but because they are not really that interested and never took the time to ascertain if they were really interested before starting out.  They were not honest with themselves.

The time honoured way is to work hard.  There is no substitute for it.  But working hard also requires consistency.  Like eating, sleeping etc you have to make time for it.  But as we all know it is much easier when we have a guide or someone to show us the way.  To make best use of our time and energy.  To make sure we do not get too sidetracked.  And to keep us walking on the path.

Because simply working hard could end up being a case of bashing your head against a wall without the know how and the skills.  It’s finding someone who knows the basics as well as the progressions and variations and being willing and able to impart some of it to you.  Sure you will have to fiddle and find your own flavour but a good teacher can shorten the learning curve a lot.  Just don’t expect to have your hand held or have it spoonfed to you.  You will learn little without the requisite experimentation and exploration demanded of learning anything well.

And like any growing process, there will be pains and setbacks.  But that is part of the process.  No river runs straight.

Because if hard work is acceleration then know how is direction.

But it is all for nought if you cannot be honest with yourself in terms of where you are and where you want to go.  And you do not have the belief to get behind the wheel in the first place and take that first step.

On shoulders

Shoulders.

Some, no, most people think they are separate parts of the body.

Oh, how do I train my shoulders, they ask.

Or, my shoulder clicks and hurts when I do activity x.

Often they are simply referring to the glenohumeral joint.

They may go to see a doctor or a physio.

Do some theraband exercises, they may be told.

They do them religiously and it does get a little better.

But the problem with simply strength training a muscle in a two dimensional manner is that the body doesn’t actually work that way. It is far more complex than that.

The shoulder works three dimensionally. So even just training your rotator cuff muscles through internal and external rotation movements on their own will not address the issue. It will help but first let us take a closer look at the shoulder.

If we look at the glenohumeral joint, the shoulder is made up of the humerus (upper arm) and the scapula (shoulder blade). Nothing special about that. But even just by acknowledging that the shoulder is a joint not just a muscle, we now realise that anything that affects these two bones must affect the joint.

So looking beyond the 4 rotator cuffs, we come across other muscles like the levator scapulae, the trapezius muscles, latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior, even pec minor, biceps, brachialis, the rhomboids, triceps, coracobrachialis, deltoid, teres major and even the inferior part of omohyoid. But wait, there are also the flexors and extensors of the forearm. That is over 30 muscles all up. Now do you begin to appreciate the complexity of the shoulder?

So how are we supposed to train the shoulder then?

Not by just training the muscles separately. But together. Training them to coordinated movement of the actual shoulder joint.

This requires rather complex movements when we compare it to simple and commonly prescribed physical therapy exercises like internal/external rotation, wall slides, scapular plus pushups.tai-chi-single-whip

Even things like shoulder circles are more complex as they require control of the joint through greater ranges of motion. Not just simple movements, they are really combinations of movements which is why most people with and without shoulder injuries will hear their shoulders go clunk clunk clunk when they do them. Because they cannot actually control the motion of the shoulder joint accurately so that it was not moving efficiently. Imagine dodgem cars where every bump was a clunk rather than a clean run.

I had lecturers at university who would say the shoulder or rather the rotator cuff muscles were being overused and hence getting injured. I would disagree and say that the programming is what is lacking. So the best way to train the programming is gradually increasing the complexity of these movements until we end up with shoulder circles and combinations thereof.

Things like tai chi and qi gong movements that are not mere waving hands around.

clubsThings like club swinging or tool use practiced properly. Which is again not that common.

Things like pushups performed properly. Sadly, also not that common.

Even things like plank holds teach stabilisation.

Combination movements in closed chain movements, open chain movements and then open chain with resistance.

If this sounds different to what you are doing to bulletproof your shoulders, then this is probably why your shoulder hurts and goes clunk clunk clunk when you try to use it.

Shoulder joints are complex things and this is only the simple version I’ve given you here.

But if you want yours to be healthy, you need to look after them properly.

Growth not ‘gains’

Back to learning posts.

Growth is continual. A journey. A process. Not just an accumulation. This is how life is too. Sometimes forward, sometimes back but heading in a general direction.

People who think of growth develop and mature. They understand that they must keep walking to grow. They learn to integrate it into their lives so that it has real function and application. People who think of ‘gains’ instead believe it is like buying things where they never perish and can be added on like lego blocks. They separate it from their ‘normal lives’ so they never understand.

It is only when you see the interrelationships and connected principles that you will really learn and understand the art.

Sometimes it is one step forward and two steps back. And sometimes you do go around in circles because growth is never linear.

However, many people believe you only gain and it is magically maintained. Like physical growing, be it a plant or a human, you must feed and nurture it as it grows day by day, moment by moment.

The only way is by practice, refinement and continual education.
